The city of Cortona, located at a height of about 500m. above sea level, on the side of a mountainous place between the Chiana Valley and the valley of the Tiber, was an Etruscan town of considerable importance. The strategic location of the city, in fact, predominant in the Chiana Valley, allowed control of the roads linking the cities of Arezzo and Perugia, Siena and the Tiber Valley. Of the Etruscan period are the remarkable ruins of the walls dating back perhaps to the fifth century. BC, which were developed for about 2 km. |
